2.2.2  Dentists/Practices

Of the approximately 72,800 practicing dentists in 2022, around 45,500 were in private practice and around 27,500 dentists were employed in practices or medical care centers. Dentist density has increased significantly across Germany since 2000. Around two thirds of the about 13,000 students currently studying dentistry are women. In contrast to the number of dentists, the number of dental practices has been steadily decreasing since 2005. Dental care is still predominantly provided by practices with only one owner (82 %) and small practice structures also dominate among group practices. However, due to the increasing number of employed dentists, the number of practitioners per practice is tending to increase (2022: an average of 1.6 practitioners per practice). The number of dental medical care centers and dentists working there is increasing  (see chapter Market consolidation).21
