2.2.4  Manufacturer/retailer

Germany is the world's second-largest producer of medical technology after the USA (with dental medical technology as a sub-sector). The German medical technology industry is characterized by a large number of small and medium-sized companies and is considered to be highly innovative with short product development cycles. The companies in the industry (manufacturers and retailers) employ around 265,000 people in 1,480 companies with more than 20 employees and around 12,000 micro-enterprises. Only 7 % of companies have more than 250 employees. The total industry turnover in 2023 (including small businesses) amounted to around € 55 billion. Detailed figures on turnover and employees are available for the 1,480 companies with more than 20 employees. These employ around 161,000 people and total turnover rose by +4.8 % to € 40.4 billion in 2023. Domestic turnover reached € 13.0 billion and export turnover € 27.4 billion. The export ratio was 68 %. According to market research company Frost & Sullivan, the global market volume for medical technology amounted to USD 599 billion in 2022, making Europe the second most important MedTech market after the USA. Within the EU, Germany has the largest market share with 25 %. 39 % of German medical technology exports are destined for countries within the EU, 20 % for the North American market and 17 % for the Asian market. The five most important target countries are the USA, China, the Netherlands, France and Switzerland.39
