2.5  Spain

With around 48 million inhabitants, Spain is the fourth largest country in the EU in terms of population. However, Spain ranks third in terms of healthcare expenditure on dental services with around € 9.2 billion. In some cases, the cost of dental treatment is covered by private supplementary dental insurance, although this often does not cover dental prostheses. Some Spanish insurance companies offer their policyholders treatment in their own network of dental clinics. The proportion of dental practices and dental clinics organized in chains is significantly higher in Spain than in Germany. More than half of dentists practice in the regions of Madrid, Catalonia and Andalusia. The practice locations are concentrated in the large metropolitan areas, while the density of care is significantly lower in more rural areas. In addition to the high unemployment rate (as of June 2024: 11.5 %; EU average: 5.9)80 , this is probably one of the reasons why oral health is well below average in a European comparison, even though the density of dentists is high.
