3.1.1  Demand structures

The demand for dental services is particularly high among the so-called ”best agers” and older senior citizens. There is often a high and unmet demand for dental care, especially among seniors in need of care.

Best agers and younger seniors

In marketing jargon, the term ”best agers” refers to a high-consumption target group that typically includes people aged 50 and over. This group is characterized by a high quality of life and an active lifestyle, and many of them have a higher income. Best agers are mostly tech-savvy (95 % of this age group use the internet)222 and often value a health-conscious lifestyle and high-quality products and services that meet their individual needs. The willingness of this type of buyer to invest in (oral) health and appearance is correspondingly high, including in the form of self-pay services. It is therefore crucial for companies to understand the needs of this important patient group in order to develop customized offers.223 In Germany, the 1964 cohort with the highest birth rate turned 60 in 2024. This means that the peak of the so-called ”demographic wave” will reach retirement age at the end of the 2020s.224 Evidence of increased health awareness is the significant improvement in oral health in the group of younger senior citizens. For example, only one in eight 65- to 74-year-olds is edentulous (in 1997 it was one in four).225
